Itinerary

TREKKING DAY 1

Start the trekking towards the Machame Camp

The trekking guides and porters will prepare for the trip in the village as they’ll pack the gear and equipment along with the essential supplies. The road may be damp, slippery, or become a muddy terrain based on the weather conditions. You may choose to take a car to drive from the village or walk for three km to reach the Machame Gate in approximately one hour.

You’ll start the trek on a narrow rainforest track from where you’ll join other trekking groups on this famous trail. In case of rain, tourists may experience wet puddles and slippery conditions. The guides will ensure the group’s safety by assisting during the trek.

Overnight Stay: Machame Camp (9,850m’)

Trekking Duration: 5-7 hours

TREKKING DAY 2

Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

We start the day early at the Machame Camp and head out for day two of the trek after breakfast. On the Western Breach, the glaciers are now visible as we head towards to west of Kibo. After a short hike, you reach the Shira campsite. As the group hikes towards the center of the rocky trail, the greenery becomes heavier, and tourists can view the spectacular, tall groundsels of weed along the way.

Overnight Stay: Shira 2 Camp (12,795m’)

Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours

TREKKING DAY 3

Shira 2 to Barranco Camp

Enjoy luxurious views of the Barranco Valley from your camp located at the base of the Barranco Wall.

After enjoying lunch in a designated area at the camp, trekkers begin their journey towards the Scree Path to the Lava Tower. Mostly during this climb, individuals may begin to feel symptoms of breathlessness, dizziness, or nausea due to the rising altitude.

Upon reaching the high altitude at the Lava Tower in approximately two hours, one may settle and familiarize themselves with the area. The path from the Barranco Camping area towards Lava Tower offers a great opportunity to take memorable photographs alongside the picturesque landscape of Western Breach and Breach Wall.

Overnight Stay: Barranco Camp (13,004m’)

Trekking Duration:
 6-7 hours

TREKKING DAY 4

Barranco Camp to Karanga

The tents at this camp are erected on a narrow and rocky edge of the mountain that also often faces strong winds. To ensure your safety and avoid any accidents, acquaint yourself with the area before the night falls. The last climb to reach Karanga starts after the night as trekkers pace up for a high-altitude and comparatively challenging hike.

However, the reward of the difficult trek comes in the form of the magnificent and awe-inspiring view from the top of the Barranco Wall. A steep hike on the edges and rocky terrain brings the trekkers to the campsite for the night.

Overnight Stay: Karanga Camp (13,231m’)

Trekking Duration: 4-5 hours

TREKKING DAY 5

Karanga to Barafu Camp

As you approach the peak, the terrain starts resembling that of the moon. Vigilance is required to maintain safety from the lava formations along the way. We’ll commence our climb towards Stella Point around 23:30, after light refreshments.

Heading in the northwest direction, the trekkers will climb through Scree towards Stella Point. This hike is known to be one of the most physically and mentally challenging hikes. After reaching Stella Point, trekkers can unwind and relax as they enjoy the spectacular view and sunrise – depending on the clarity in the sky.

From here onwards, trekkers usually encounter snow all the way towards Uhuru Peak. Your stay at the summit will majorly depend on the favorable weather conditions. However, a short stay is advised to avoid the cold and fatigue, which may hamper the continuation of the hike.

Overnight Stay: Barafu Camp (15,331′)

Trekking Duration: 3-4 hours

TREKKING DAY 6

Barafu to Summit/ Mweka Millennium Camp

After reaching your final destination at the summit, you will be able to enjoy the glorious beauty surrounding the Mweka Millenium Camp. This is a day to remember as you finish one of the most difficult trekking hikes with some of the most challenging conditions on difficult terrain. After celebrating at the top of the mountain and relaxing around the camp area for the night, tourists begin descending.

Overnight Stay: Mweka Millennium Camp (12,500′)

Trekking Duration: 8-10 hours to Summit and 4-7 hours to the Mweka Millennium Camp
