Itinerary
TREKKING DAY 1
Mti Mkubwa camp 2650m
On camp day one, we’ll have a delicious breakfast before we head over to Londorossi Gate from our hotel at Moshi. It’s an estimated 2–3 hour drive from the hotel. Once we arrive, we’ll collect the registration from the gate and drive for an hour to Lemosho, where we’ll have a lunch picnic. We’ll meet the rest of the crew, i.e., our guide, porters, and cooks. We’ll head over to the thick rainforest and begin and hike for a good 3–4 hours, covering an estimated distance of 7 km. We’ll get to view the beautiful native plants and flowers like Kilimanjaro Impatiens throughout our hike. If we’re lucky enough, we’ll also get a glimpse of the forest wildlife and see the exotic white Colobus Monkeys.
TREKKING DAY 2
Shira one camp 3610m
After breakfast, we’ll begin our hike through the rainforest as our crew clears out the camping site on the next day. It’ll be a 2-hour hike before we get out of the lush rainforest and into the moorland zone. We’ll continue walking toward the Shira Plateau, where we’ll see the old lava flow. We’ll slow our pace to enjoy the view and also safely acclimatize. We’ll hike for a total of 5–7 hours, including our lunch break picnic time before we head over to our camp and retire for the evening.
TREKKING DAY 3
Shira two camp 3850m
On this day, we’ll cover a total of 10kms distance. The hiking duration will be over 4–6 hours, and on our way, we’ll also get to view Shira Plateau, a renowned world heritage. We’ll then walk over to Shira Cathedral, that’ll be very beneficial for acclimatization. We’ll have a lunch break picnic while enjoying the view before heading to the camp for our overnight stay.
TREKKING DAY 4
Moir hut 4200m via lava tower
On day four, we’ll head to the Lava Tower. We’ll start our hike by walking through the gradual boulder rocks to the alpine desert. We’ll meet some other hikers on the Machame route and begin hiking over Lava Tower along with them through the same trail. Lava Tower is over 150m high rock formation. We’ll get there around noon, have our lunch break, and rest for a while. We’ll then head over to Moir Hut, located at the bottom of the lava flow, where we’ll stay for the night.
TREKKING DAY 5
Buffalo camp 4020m
The next day after breakfast, we’ll hike toward the eastern, northern side, where we’ll get to view the Kibo Peak. We’ll rest and have a lunch picnic before heading over to our next campsite. Our hiking duration will be 4 to 6 hours, covering a total distance of 10 km.
TREKKING DAY 6
Third cave 3875m
Soon after breakfast, we’ll continue our hike up to the eastern north side for over 4 to 5 hours. Once we get to our camp, we’ll have a delicious hot meal and rest for the next day. In this camp, we’ll get to meet other trekkers who are on the way to the Rongai route. At the campsite, you can enjoy the view of Mawenzi Peak.
TREKKING DAY 7
School hut 4800m
Day seven is going to be a long one. We’ll hike for 4 to 6 hours, covering a total distance of 10 km, while crossing the alpine desert and the saddle area. Once we arrive at the camp, we’ll rest for the next day. Remember, this camp will be the last water point. Our crew members will carry from here on.
TREKKING DAY 8
Crater camp 5700
This day will be a challenging hiking day. We’ll begin our hike by gradually climbing up to the crater’s camp through a zigzag trail that keeps getting steeper. All hikers will move to the crater rim that is over 5685m steep. You’ll have sufficient time to make memories and take pictures after having a light snack. After some rest, we’ll continue heading toward Stella Point 5756m, where we’ll enter the crater. We’ll get some rest here. Hikers will have an option to continue the tour and explore the inner crater. The slopes of the inner volcano are steep and flat. Others can choose the hike over the ash pit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
TREKKING DAY 9
Uhuru summit 5895m then descend to Mweka camp 3100m
On the second last day, we’ll wake up earlier than usual. After enjoying our breakfast, we’ll prepare to climb up to the summit. It will be our last hike. Therefore, it will be tiring and a bit difficult. The trail will be flat and steep at the beginning, before we get on the top, near the Uhuru sign, where the terrain gets rocky. It will be challenging compared to other summits at the bottom of the camp. However, the reward of viewing the soaring glaciers in Africa’s park will make all the effort worth it. We’ll enjoy the view for a good 20 minutes before climbing down to the Barafu base. We’ll rest and have brunch before heading to our day’s final destination, Mweka Hut (3100m).
TREKKING DAY 10
Descend to Mweka gate 1640m and back to Hotel
On the last day, after breakfast, we’ll meet the crew and take group pictures before we begin our descent down to the rainforest. If lucky, we’ll get a view of the exotic white Colobus and blue monkeys. Once we reach the gate, we’ll sign out and receive our certificates before heading back to our hotel in Moshi. You’ll enjoy a well-earned rest, shower, and Kilimanjaro beer.
